2014 was, without any doubt, the year of the ‘selfie’. Everyone, from A-listers at the Oscars 2014 to monkeys in the jungle (a macaque monkey joined the selfie craze, yes), was taking pictures of themselves all year long.
Selfie sticks became one of the most sought-out ‘tools’, and searches for the word ‘selfie’ increased 8x in during the course of the year. According to Google Trends, everyone and their mother wanted to know how to take a ‘better selfie’, while “the rest of us were simply asking ‘what is a selfie’”. Hannah Udren even posted a selfie after her plane crashed back in March 2014. Ridiculous? You decide.
Anyhow, if you belong to the group of people who enjoys taking selfies and would like to learn how to create the best photos ever, then listen closely. London’s City Lit College is planning to launch the world’s first selfie course.
The month-long course will kick off in March, and will offer you a chance to take an in-depth look at the art of self-portrait photography, as well as advice on how to improve your selfie-taking skills. At the price of £132 you will be able “improve your critical understanding of the photographic self-portrait” and “develop your ideas to produce a coherent body of work”. Various practitioners will be included in the project, and one of them might even be Ellen DeGeneres herself.
Anyone’s allowed to join the course, those who take selfies on a regular basis are more than welcome, and all you need to bring is your photographic equipment and a selection of photos. You can read more about the course right here.
