A true Apple iPhone connoisseur always keeps themselves updated with the latest news of what the company is churning out next. So, the obvious question on every iPhone lover’s mind in the UK is “when is the iPhone 13 coming out?”
On the 13th October 2020, Apple introduced its iPhone 12 series with iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini. These fourteenth-generation models came with 5G and a plethora of other brilliant updates. Its A14 Bionic, with advanced components, became the first 5-nanometre chip in the smartphone market. One of the features that we love is its Dolby Vision recording, which offers 60 times more colour!
With 2020 seeing such an amazing product release, we are expecting the iPhone 13 to be the new iPhone 2021. The rumour mills have been churning, and so we have been looking out for the details and specifications.
Will the next iteration of iPhones be called iPhone 13 or will it sail under the 12 series banners? What more can be expected from Apple in 2021?
Let’s find out!
Apple iPhone 13 Release Date 2021: When to Expect the Launch?
Speculations are high regarding the iPhone 13 series. In addition to the iPhone 13, predictions for the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max are also doing the rounds.
From previous launches, Apple Inc.’s launch pattern seems to favour the month of September. It is expected that Apple will announce the new iPhone 13 likely on the 7th or 14th September, with the model hitting stores on the 17th or 24th of the same month.
Reports have already informed us that the company has registered seven new phones with the EEC database in June 2021. Will the registered model numbers A2628, A2630, A2634, A2635, A2640, A2643 and A2645 correspond to the iPhone 13 series? We’ll have to wait and see.
iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12s: What’s in a Name?

The buzz started with the next series being called the iPhone 13. It seems sensible enough that Apple would follow the series iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and introduce us to iPhone 13.
However, a growing number of rumours suggest that Apple may launch the next edition as the iPhone 12s. Given that Apple has strayed from convention when it named its iPhone 10 series as iPhone X, it seems quite plausible.
Furthermore, prominent leakers of Apple Inc.’s future products, such as Jon Prosser, have been reiterating that the iPhone 12s will be the next iPhone. To further add to the credibility of this possibility, the number 13 is considered unlucky in many countries and cultures.
Apple Inc. is a worldwide favoured company, the superstition around the number could make them skip the number 13. After all, it does not make sense for the company to upset its loyal clients over a name.
But once again, a more credible source than leakers and speculative web pages from the supply chain begs to differ. The source suggested the iPhone that has already entered the countdown stages of release will be called iPhone 13.
Regardless, the next installment in the iPhone franchise is expected to offer more and better features in comparison to the iPhone XS or later iPhones.
Expected Features and Specifications of iPhone 13: An Update or an Upgrade?
Now that we have covered the basics, let’s get to the juicy bit; features! As with previous generations, the next generation of the iPhone is also predicted to have 4 new versions.
iPhone 13 Overall Design
The new phones are expected to keep the same size as the 12 series. Though, some rumours suggest they might shrink. In terms of thickness, you can expect the 13 series to be thicker than its predecessor. The estimated increase in thickness brings it up to 7.57mm thick, which is not too much compared to the 7.4mm thickness of the iPhone 12.
Leaked iPhone screen protector designs suggest that these phones will come with a smaller display notch, and the earpiece speaker shifted to the bezel. Apple is said to achieve the smaller notch by combining the infrared flood illuminator, sensor and dot projector into a single module. Another report suggests that shrinkage in the die size of VCSEL chips used in the Face ID scanner could result in a smaller notch.
In addition to the overall thickness, we are also likely to see the camera bump sticking out by 2.51mm as opposed to iPhone 12, which had them between 1.5mm to 1.7mm. We’ll talk more about the larger camera module later.
You can also expect the SIM card tray and the power buttons to have shifted further down, while the overall squarish corners of the iPhone remain. While there are speculations regarding the dropping of the Lightning port, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that may not be the case.
iPhone 13 Chipset and Operating System

Apple Inc. is most likely to introduce newer chipsets for improved efficiency of the iPhone 13 series and support the host of features. The new series will feature an A15 bionic chipset that relies on the same 5-nanometer fabrication process as the A14. Reports claim that the production of these chipsets is already underway at the TSMC.
The A15 chipset would offer improved performance and power, which is almost 75% faster than the Snapdragon 888 in the Galaxy S21. It is also expected to deliver close to 4,600 scores on the Geekbench 5 multi-core score. There also appears to be a potential for Wi-Fi 6E amongst the wireless features of the iPhone 13.
All iPhone 13 handsets will be loaded with the iOS 15 that was introduced earlier this year at the WWDC. Amongst the significant updates, we are excited about FaceTime. FaceTime is expected to deliver spatial audio, voice isolation, Grid View and Portrait Mode and also scheduling links.
SharePlay is yet another feature of this OS we are looking forward to. This feature will allow you to multitask with picture-in-picture and listen to music, watch movies or share your screen. Other highlightable updates include the Live Text and Focus modes.
iPhone 13 Battery and MagSafe
Whilst rumours about Apple ditching the Lightning port are making the rounds, it seems rather unlikely. Despite new original Apple cases hosting MagSafe features, Kuo argues that this ecosystem still needs to mature further. So, you are most likely still going to see the charging port, along with the wireless charging and data transfer potential.
Talking about the battery, the buzz is hinting at a larger battery for the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 13 Pro Max could come with a 4,352mAh battery, whilst the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, 6.1-inch iPhones, could come with a 3,095mAh battery.
In terms of wireless charging features, the iPhone 13 may have larger coils making stronger magnets a necessity. This design could also result in the Android smartphone users’ favourite feature coming to the iPhone; reverse wireless charging! This could mean you could easily charge small devices like the AirPods with your Apple phone.
iPhone 13 Display Screen
The next-generation iPhone could potentially have the energy-efficient LTPO display technologies that you are familiar with on your Apple Watch. These screens are energy efficient, hence they will boost battery life by not draining too much power.
However, going by what the sources believe, LTPO with 120Hz refresh rates may be limited solely to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. There is also the possibility that these screens will have the Always-On feature.
Features that are also buzzing in the community claim that this series may feature touch-sensitive sides and an under-screen Touch ID scanner.
iPhone 13 Camera

Now, let’s talk about the most used feature on the iPhone in today’s world; the camera.
Apple’s three-year agreement with Sony as the supplier hints at the possibility of a LiDAR sensor feature on the iPhone 13 series. At present, you can find this feature on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max allowing you to take great photos in low light conditions. Sensor-shift optical image stabilisation is also another feature to be expected in this series.
Apart from the sensors, the series is said to make use of ultra-wide camera lenses for better photographs. The camera module is expected to be 0.9mm larger and covered with sapphire glass. We could also see a diagonal arrangement of the camera in this series.
iPhone Colour Options
As always, expectations for colours other than the standard are floating around. The iPhone 13 Pro is expected to come in silver, gold and a variant of grey/black. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 may come in red, white and black colour options.
However, two more colour options are being touted by the community. There is hope that Apple may introduce a matte black finish for this range. Whilst not likely, an orangish bronze colour option also seems like a potential contender.
Will the iPhone 13 Price be Heavy on the Pocket?
Looking at the previous iPhone series, prices are expected to be relatively similar. Here is the breakdown of the iPhone 12 series prices and the most likely pricing for the iPhone 13 series as well
Model | Price |
iPhone 12 Mini | £699 ($699) |
iPhone 12 | £799 ($799) |
iPhone 12 Pro | £999 ($999) |

Future Apple Releases: What is in store for 2021?

The accuracy of Jon Prosser’s leaks regarding potential Apple product predictions and releases has so far been high. If we are to believe his latest update, then 2021 is also set to see a new iPad Mini inspired by the edge-to-edge iPad Pro design.
Apart from iPhone 13 Pro models, the base series is expected to remain with a 60Hz display. However, Prosser suggests that will not be the case for the next series. Rumours hint that all iPhone 14 series mobile phones will host the 120Hz display, if and when they are launched. The new iPhone SE 2021, will probably be a no-show until 2022.
Of all the iPhone accessories, perhaps the Apple Watch is the most interesting. Recent rumours suggest that an Apple Watch 7 may be in the making. If the rumours are to be believed, this watch may come with squared-off sides and better durability for extreme environments. Though we cannot explain how, it is also speculated that the watch could also track blood sugar.
